There’s something incredibly freeing about life on the road.
The ability to wake up next to alpine lakes, chase dirt roads into the middle of nowhere, and call some of the most beautiful places in North America “home.”
But freedom comes with responsibility.
When you spend enough time traveling off-grid, you quickly realize that safety looks a little different than it does in everyday life. There’s no neighbor to borrow jumper cables from. No quick trip to the nearest urgent care when something goes sideways. No cell service in many of the places we intentionally seek out.
And while van life often gets romanticized on social media, the reality is that preparation is what allows us to adventure confidently.
Over the past couple of years living on the road full-time, we’ve learned that a few key safety items can make all the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major problem.
These are six items we genuinely wouldn’t travel without.
1. A Reliable Dash Camera System
If you spend a lot of time driving, especially long distances in unfamiliar terrain, a quality dash camera is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself.

2. Bear Spray
One of our favorite things about traveling full-time is getting away from crowds.
The downside? Sometimes that means sharing space with wildlife.
Over the years, we’ve spent extended time in places like Alaska, British Columbia, Montana, Wyoming, and remote areas of the Mountain West where wildlife encounters are not just possible, they’re expected.
Bear spray is one of those things we hope we never need. But we never camp without it easily accessible.
The biggest mistake people make is burying safety gear deep inside a drawer or storage compartment.
If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need it, seconds matter.
We keep ours somewhere immediately reachable both inside and outside the van.
And honestly, simply having it gives us peace of mind when hiking or camping in bear country.
3. A Comprehensive First Aid Kit
This one sounds obvious. But a lot of travelers carry a first aid kit without ever checking what’s actually inside.
If you’re living on the road full-time, especially if you spend time off-grid, your kit should go well beyond basic band-aids.
A solid van life first aid kit should include:
- Sterile gauze and wraps
- Antiseptic wipes
- Tweezers
- Pain relievers
- Allergy medication
- Burn cream
- Wound closure strips
- Emergency blanket
- Blister care
- Tick removal tool
- Prescription medications

We’ve learned that even relatively minor injuries feel very different when the nearest town is an hour away.
4. Satellite Internet for Emergencies
A lot of people think of Starlink as simply a convenience tool. Fast internet. Working remotely. Uploading YouTube videos. Streaming Netflix in the middle of nowhere.
And yes… all of those things are great. But for us, Starlink has become a legitimate safety tool.
When you intentionally camp in places where cell service disappears for days at a time, having access to communication matters.
If weather changes unexpectedly, vehicle problems arise, or you need to contact family or emergency services, having internet access can completely change the situation.
It adds a layer of security we didn’t fully appreciate until living remotely became our everyday reality.
And frankly, being able to check weather forecasts before driving sketchy mountain roads has saved us more than once.
5. Pet Monitoring When You Travel with Animals
If you travel with pets, this one is huge.
Our dog (Wez) is family.
And one of the biggest concerns whenever you live or travel in a van with a pet is their safety.
The Waggle Pet Monitor gives us remote monitoring, so we can check in on him when we’re away from the van. Through our phones, we can quickly pull up a video to make sure he is comfortable.
Bonus, we can also use the camera as a general way to monitor our home on wheels when we’re away from it, even when Wez is with us.

There are places we love camping where cell service simply doesn’t exist. And often… that’s exactly the point, but remote travel comes with risk.
A twisted ankle on a hike. Vehicle breakdowns in isolated desert roads. Unexpected medical emergencies. Weather conditions changing faster than anticipated.

The truth is, most emergencies don’t arrive with warning. And the gear you bring isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about creating freedom. Freedom to explore farther. Freedom to camp in remote places confidently. Freedom to enjoy the lifestyle knowing you’ve prepared for the unexpected.
Van life gives us access to some of the most beautiful corners of the world.
A little preparation helps make sure we get to keep enjoying them.
